Mars Rising

Mars Rising

Named for Scorpio's traditional ruling planet, this crimson libation showcases blood orange-infused gin harmoniously balanced with Campari and sweet vermouth. A touch of cherry liqueur adds depth and mystery to this sophisticated riff on a Negroni, while orange flower water provides an ethereal finish that awakens the senses. The blood orange garnish serves as a reminder of Mars' fiery influence over this celestial sipper.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blood orange-infused gin*

  • 0.75 oz Campari

  • 0.5 oz sweet vermouth

  • 0.25 oz cherry liqueur

  • 3 drops orange flower water

  • Blood orange twist for garnish

*Blood Orange-Infused Gin:

  • 750 ml London Dry gin

  • 3 medium blood oranges, sliced

  • Zest of 1 blood orange

  • Combine gin, sliced oranges, and zest in airtight container. Infuse 24 hours in cool, dark place. Strain through fine mesh lined with cheesecloth and bottle.

Instructions

  1. Prepare blood orange-infused gin: Combine gin, sliced blood oranges, and zest in an airtight container. Store in cool, dark place for 24 hours, gently shaking once halfway through. Strain through fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth and store in clean bottle.

  2. In a mixing glass, combine blood orange-infused gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur, and orange flower water.

  3. Add ice and stir for 30-40 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.

  4. Strain into a chilled nick and nora glass.

  5. Express blood orange twist over the drink's surface to release oils.

  6. Use the expressed twist as garnish, positioning it elegantly on the rim.

Notes

  • Blood orange-infused gin keeps for up to 2 months when properly stored

  • Orange flower water is potent - use drops, not dashes, to avoid perfumed taste

  • If blood oranges are unavailable, navel oranges work but lack the deep crimson color

  • Cherry liqueur brands vary in sweetness - adjust to taste preference

  • Best served in nick and nora glass to concentrate the aromatic oils

Pairs well with: Dark chocolate truffles, aged manchego cheese, or as a sophisticated pre-dinner cocktail that honors the intensity and passion of Scorpio season.
